Albemarle Food Pantry Moves to Temp Location

May 27, 2022 4:35 pm

Food Bank of the Albemarle announced today that the Albemarle Food Pantry, currently hosted on-site, will move temporarily as construction begins on phase two of the expansion of the facility.

The Albemarle Food Pantry, a program of the Food Bank, will temporarily relocate to 1008 Halstead Blvd., Elizabeth City (the former Cycle Gallery). The pantry will be temporarily closed after the last distribution on May 31st, and will reopen as a drive-through at the new location on Tuesday, June 14th.

Regular operational hours will remain on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. The pantry will continue providing canned goods, fresh produce, and refrigerated items like dairy and meats. The produce stand, which usually operates on Mondays and Thursday afternoons will be postponed until further notice. Residents that normally visit the Albemarle Food Pantry can receive food at the Salvation Army and First Baptist Church pantries in Elizabeth City.

“This change will only affect the location that the Food Pantry distributes from, we will continue to provide the same level of quality, nutritious food” said Liz Reasoner, Executive Director of Food Bank of the Albemarle. “We knew it was incredibly important to continue this vital service to the community while construction is underway.”

The Food Bank initiated construction of a three part expansion in late 2020 with a brand new 80,000 cu. ft. freezer and cooler. This increase of over 650% additional space enables the Food Bank to distribute more fresh produce, lean proteins, and dairy to over 100 partners and 145 programs.

The second phase of construction will expand the Food Bank’s footprint an additional 17,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space, a teaching kitchen, dedicated climate controlled volunteer space, and an enhanced on-site food pantry.
