Things You Should Know Before volunteering

All volunteers sign in at the front desk kiosk. If you have any issues signing in to your Volunteer Hub account, please ask a staff member!

Service Animals

We want to make sure that you get the most out of your volunteer experience with the Food Bank! We adhere to strict rules and regulations regarding food preparation and food handling spaces, so service animals are not authorized in the warehouse. Luckily, we do have other opportunities for you to contribute and support our mission by assisting in other support roles.

If you have a service animal, please contact the Volunteer Manager at brgray@afoodbank.org or (252) 562-8148 before volunteering so that we can ensure you are assigned to the right role for your needs.

Registration is required prior to coming out!

Do NOT come to volunteer if you feel ill in any way, no matter if it’s a cold or minor sickness. We want to keep our staff and other volunteers safe and healthy.

NO tobacco use is allowed on the property – includes vaping products.

NO flip flops or sandals – You will not be allowed to volunteer in the warehouse without proper shoes, such as sneakers. (Crocs are not accepted shoe wear).

NO cell phone use at any time in the warehouse. No charging of personal phone in the warehouse. (Please ask a Food Bank employee to take a picture of your group if you would like one taken).

Please check volunteer calendar for days we are closed to the public/ volunteers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Volunteering

Do I need to register before coming out?

Yes.  As an individual volunteer, please register on our Volunteerhub website; fba.volunteerhub.com. This allows us to know how many volunteers will be in the warehouse.

Does everyone in my group need a Volunteer Hub account?

No. The Point of Contact for the group will be the one who needs to have a Volunteer Hub account, they will specify total number in the group under their event registration.

Is there a place to leave my valuables/ bag during volunteering?

Please leave valuables locked inside your vehicle. The Food Bank is not responsible for lost or missing items.

Can I leave early?

We encourage all volunteers to arrive on-time and stay for the full session. If there is a scheduling issue to where you need to leave a little early, please let the warehouse staff you are assigned to know.

What is the minimum age for youth volunteers?

Volunteers 12 years and older are welcome to volunteer. Volunteers under the age of 16 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times while at the Food Bank. No child under 16 may be dropped off at the Food Bank without parental supervision.

Who do I talk to about getting a community service letter?

We can provide a letter on Food Bank letterhead for both school and court-appointed community service once hours are completed.

Please note that your request must be received at least 24 hours in advance. Requests for letters must be submitted to: Brian Gray at brgray@afoodbank.org

I need court ordered community service hours, when can I volunteer?

When creating your VolunteerHub account, select “I need court ordered community service”. Once the Volunteer Coordinator approves your account, you will get an email saying you can register for events open to court ordered community service volunteers on the VolunteerHub website.

Something came up and I can’t volunteer today, what do I do?

Please go to Volunteer Hub and cancel your registration or contact the Volunteer Manager.
