Over the past week, the Food Bank of the Albemarle has seen an incredible amount of support and activity including pop-up distributions, food drives, and donations.
Demand for food assistance has surged with increases of 35-50% in need with our hunger-relief partners, and a 42% increase at our Neighborhood Food Pantry this year.
In response to the uncertainty of SNAP benefits and the on-going government shutdown, our community, foundation partners, and the Governor’s office have stepped up in a big way to help us meet urgent needs. SNAP benefits are being distributed in November, but in reduced amounts, and delays are expected in disbursements.
SNAP remains the most effective tool in fighting hunger- in fact, SNAP provides 9 meals for every meal that a food bank can provide.
We’re here for the community. If you need food, please use our Food Locator Tool on our website to find the food distribution closest to you. Contact your representatives and advocate for programs like SNAP that our neighbors rely on. Give a monetary donation so that we can continue distributions and ensure everyone has enough to eat.
