Erica and her family come to the food pantry once a month for assistance. She relies on the variety of shelf-stable goods, produce, and meats available to help get through the month.
“In my house, it’s just my husband, my father, and me, and we have two small children,” Eric says. “I had to quit my full-time job to take care of my dad. I wouldn’t be able to feed my children or my dad if we didn’t have SNAP benefits, if we didn’t have the food pantry to help us in those few days and weeks in between when those benefits get replenished.”
Neighbors come to their local pantry as a supplement to what they can purchase on their own, or with essential programs like SNAP (also known as food stamps). The cost of housing, utilities, and food have put an even greater strain on their family’s limited financial resources.
“The house that we live in, there’s a lot of maintenance that goes into that. Sometimes, if the food bill is higher, either I’ll go without, or my husband will go without, because we have to make sure our children eat and make sure my dad can eat. My children are my priority, so we always make sure they have enough.”
“The food bank is incredibly helpful in supplemental food. You get fresh fruit and vegetables, you get meat and different items at the food pantry. It’s a huge help.”
