Volunteer with us – January 15th!

January 2, 2024 3:39 pm

Food Bank of the Albemarle will be open Monday, January 15 and welcoming volunteers and groups on the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service.

The Day of Service, observed on the third Monday in January, is the largest civic engagement in the United States. It is the only federal holiday that is designated by Congress as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.”

Food Bank of the Albemarle has a variety of volunteer opportunities on the MLK Day of Service, and throughout the year, for individuals and groups. Volunteers may help with senior food box packing, stocking pantry shelves, general cleaning, or help with landscaping tasks. Individuals with specific skills are also welcome, to assist with general warehouse work or even CDL A or B drivers.

Shifts available on Monday, January 15 will include both morning and afternoon shifts to accommodate for different schedules.

Volunteer service strengthens communities, helps people build new skills, bridges barriers, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of what a community should be. Coretta Scott King said, “The greatest birthday gift my husband could receive is if people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds celebrated the holiday by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others.”

Volunteer registration is required for all Food Bank service opportunities. Sign up is available online at www.afoodbank.org/volunteer. For additional information on registering, please contact Kayla Collins, Development and Volunteer Coordinator at kcollins@afoodbank.org or Brian Gray, Communications and Volunteer Manager at brgray@afoodbank.org.
