Fight Hunger.Spark Change: How this Annual Campaign Supports Local Communities

April 10, 2024 1:14 pm

The Annual Walmart Fight Hunger Spark Change Campaign has brought national attention to Food Banks and hunger.

Food Bank of the Albemarle (and food banks nationwide) raise awareness and funds to keep nutritious food flowing in our communities. Each week, the Food Bank picks up food donations from the five Walmart locations in our 15 county service area. In 2023, these stores donated a total of 331,323 pounds of food!

Rising food prices, continued supply chain disruptions and the end of pandemic-related federal emergency support programs are affecting the charitable food system as well as over 36,000 people in northeastern North Carolina. This includes an estimated 11,700 children! Food insecurity is a very real issue affecting the health and growth of our communities.

Here’s what our local stores donated in 2023:

Walmart – Kitty Hawk: 38,847 lbs.
Walmart – Ahoskie: 49,727 lbs.
Walmart – Williamston: 52,889 lbs.
Walmart – Elizabeth City: 85,940 lbs.
Walmart – Washington, NC: 103, 920 lbs.

During the month of the Fight Hunger, Spark Change campaign- you can give direct at the register of your local Walmart store! Be sure to thank the store associates and managers for their continued commitment to supporting the hunger relief network of Food Bank of the Albemarle.
